Common questions

What is a compact nursing license?

The Nurse Licensure Compact lets an RN or LPN/LVN whose home state is a member hold one multistate license and practice in every other member state, in person or by telehealth.

Does the compact cover APRNs or nurse practitioners?

No. The compact covers RN and LPN/LVN licenses only. APRNs need a license in each state where they practice.

Where do I do my CE on a compact license?

Your license renews in your home state, so you meet your home state's CE rules. Some states and employers also ask for state-specific topics, which we show for each state.

What if I move to another compact state?

When your primary home state changes, you must apply for a license in your new home state within 60 days, and meet that state's requirements.

Which states are not in the compact?

Alaska, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Oregon and Washington DC are not members. Massachusetts has passed the compact but it is not in force yet.
