Continuing Education Credit Designation
This educational activity is credited for 3 contact hours at completion of the activity.
Overview
This course prepares nurses to identify electronic cigarette and other vaping exposures, explain aerosol-related health risks, and recognize nicotine dependence, poisoning, device injuries, and suspected vaping-associated lung injury. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to conduct a nonjudgmental assessment, initiate appropriate escalation and monitoring, support evidence-based cessation, and provide developmentally appropriate education and follow-up.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate electronic cigarettes and vaping aerosols from combustible tobacco products and smoke.
- Assess the device, substance, frequency, intensity, and circumstances of a patient's vaping exposure.
- Recognize clinical findings that require evaluation for nicotine poisoning, thermal injury, or electronic cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury.
- Apply an evidence-based clinical pathway to the initial evaluation, monitoring, escalation, and discharge planning of patients with suspected vaping-related illness.
- Evaluate nicotine dependence and deliver brief, patient-centered cessation interventions for adults and adolescents.
- Educate patients and families about aerosol exposure, dual use, pregnancy risks, safe storage, and prevention of relapse or recurrent exposure.
