Overview
In nursing practice, understanding hematology is essential for providing comprehensive patient care. From the initial interpretation of a blood count to managing complex conditions, a nurse's judgment guides critical interventions. This foundational understanding begins with recognizing that a hemoglobin value is more than just a number; it's a piece of a larger puzzle that includes the patient's usual values, rate of change, and reported symptoms. Developing this clinical perspective is crucial for identifying conditions like anemia, which arises when the blood lacks sufficient healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin, impacting oxygen delivery to tissues. This forms the bedrock for all subsequent hematological assessments. This course addresses the critical aspects of patient assessment, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based interventions in hematology, preparing nurses to manage complex patient needs effectively.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Describe what anemia is and interpret a low hemoglobin result in the context of the patient's symptoms, history and rate of change.
- Differentiate the common anemias, including iron-deficiency, vitamin B12-deficiency, hemolytic and aplastic anemia, by their underlying mechanism.
- Explain the nursing role in iron-replacement therapy, including expected response time, common gastrointestinal side effects and dietary teaching.
- Describe the inheritance, newborn-screening detection and multisystem effects of sickle cell disease, and distinguish disease from sickle cell trait.
- Recognize bleeding signs associated with thrombocytopenia and inherited factor deficiencies, and describe appropriate protective nursing measures.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and describe the nursing response to a suspected clot.
- Explain anticoagulant and antiplatelet safety teaching, including bleeding precautions, interaction awareness and what the patient should report.
- Describe infection risk and supportive-care priorities for a patient receiving treatment for acute leukemia.
- Apply a structured verification and monitoring routine to blood component administration and describe recognition of a suspected transfusion reaction.
- Identify the limits of nursing scope in hematology care and the point at which findings must be escalated to the prescriber.
