Continuing Education Credit Designation
This educational activity is credited for 3 contact hours at completion of the activity.
Overview
This course prepares nurses to recognize intrinsic, medication-related, behavioral, and environmental contributors to falls across care settings. Learners will apply current screening, assessment, and post-fall evaluation principles rather than relying on a risk score alone. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to create an individualized fall-prevention plan, support safe transfers and ambulation, teach correct use of common mobility devices, and communicate changes in fall and injury risk to the interprofessional team.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Define a fall and distinguish fall-risk screening from comprehensive multifactorial assessment.
- Identify intrinsic, extrinsic, medication-related, and situational factors that increase fall or fall-injury risk.
- Explain how normal gait, balance, posture, vision, sensation, cognition, and cardiovascular function affect safe ambulation.
- Perform an evidence-based fall-risk assessment and recognize findings requiring urgent evaluation or referral.
- Develop an individualized plan using exercise, medication review, environmental modification, continence management, and patient education.
- Demonstrate nursing principles for safe transfers, ambulation, and use of walkers and crutches.
