Overview
This course prepares nurses to distinguish the major forms of elder abuse, identify clinical warning signs and risk factors, and conduct a trauma-informed assessment that prioritizes privacy and immediate safety. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to document objective findings, follow applicable reporting requirements, initiate appropriate referrals, and support a capable older adult without increasing the risk of retaliation.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate physical, sexual, psychological, and financial abuse from neglect, abandonment, self-neglect, and appropriate clinical care.
- Identify physical, behavioral, social, and financial findings that warrant further assessment for elder abuse.
- Assess an older adult privately using trauma-informed communication, decision-making capacity principles, and an immediate-safety evaluation.
- Document suspected elder abuse using objective descriptions, direct quotations, body maps, photographs when authorized, and preservation-of-evidence practices.
- Apply federal long-term care reporting timelines and identify the state, tribal, territorial, and organizational requirements that govern other care settings.
- Initiate an interdisciplinary response that addresses urgent treatment, safety planning, protective services, law enforcement, advocacy, and follow-up care.
