Evidence-based nursing care for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment, symptom management, survivorship, recurrence, and metastatic disease.
Continuing Education Credit Designation
This educational activity is credited for 3 contact hours at completion of the activity.
Overview
This course prepares nurses to recognize breast cancer presentations, explain diagnostic and staging processes, and relate tumor biomarkers to individualized treatment. Learners will distinguish in situ, invasive, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive, and triple-negative disease. After completing the course, nurses will be able to monitor treatment toxicities, provide perioperative and supportive care, reinforce risk-reduction and survivorship plans, and escalate findings that may indicate complications, recurrence, or metastatic disease.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate in situ, invasive, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive, and triple-negative breast disease.
- Describe evidence-based screening, diagnostic imaging, biopsy, biomarker testing, and genetic risk assessment.
- Interpret the clinical significance of TNM findings, anatomic stage, prognostic stage, tumor grade, and receptor status.
- Compare local and systemic treatments used for early-stage, locally advanced, recurrent, and metastatic breast cancer.
- Implement nursing assessments and interventions for treatment toxicity, postoperative complications, lymphedema, distress, and survivorship needs.
- Teach evidence-based physical activity, nutrition, alcohol, tobacco, medication-adherence, and follow-up recommendations.
